MARIE SMITH The Fog Has Lifted

MARIE SMITHThe Fog Has Lifted consists of self-portraits and landscapes that are juxtaposed with diaristic writing that documents Marie Smith’s experience (from 2019 to 2020) with depression and anxiety.

An excerpt from the monograph: “I collected a bunch of discarded Camilla flowers from my walk, they felt velvety and smooth to touch and I wanted a memento from the day. The pink glow was vivid and, I liked the endless layers of petals which made the flowers look dense. They felt substantial in my hand and I wonder what they will look like this time next year. Once back inside I felt tired, doing small things like going outside is now exhausting. The day ended with a nice dinner, wine and a Zoom chat with friends in London and Berlin.”

Marie Smith

Marie Smith (she/they) is a neurodivergent visual artist and writer born, living, and working in London. Smith graduated in 2017 with a MA in History in Art with Photography at Birkbeck, University of London.

Being a neurodivergent person with dyspraxia and anxiety has informed how they navigates the world. Marie’s practice incorporates digital and analogue photography alongside text as a form of visual language that addresses identity, nature, sustainability, mental health, and well-being.

Marie utilises low-toxic plant, food, or herb-based developers to process their analogue film. Due to this methodology not being transferable to developing colour film, Marie now only works with black and white and camera-less film processes.

Marie is a member of Women Photograph and Black Women Photographers. Marie is an Associate Lecturer at Kingston University London and has previously lectured at Goldsmiths – University of London, and London College of Communication.
