Harman Phoenix 200 120 Film Review
Here is our Harman Phoenix 200 120 Film Review. We shot a roll in our Hasselblad 500CM. So, check out our film review and see what you think.
Last year Harman Photo brought out their very first colour film in 35mm, made entirely at the Harman factory here in the UK. We were excited to try out a brand new colour film and took a roll out around Brixton. You can see the results in our Harman Phoenix 200 Film Review.
When asking for feedback on the new film, the overwhelming response Harman received was to see Phoenix in medium format. So, here it is! Obviously, we wanted to try it out, so for our Harman Phoenix 200 120 film review, we loaded a roll in our Hasselblad 500CM and once again took it out around Brixton in South London.
Bigger Format
As we mentioned in our original Phoenix review, this film has the characteristics of a more experimental film. We knew we would get strong colours and contrast. And, even though it is medium format we expected grain, plus halation in the highlights. We took our images with these elements in mind.
Sunshine
We shot this roll out in the bright sunshine, making the most of the halation glow. There is also a warm, slightly orange, underlying colour to this film which worked well in the sun. The grain is visible and adds a pleasing texture to the images.
As with the 35mm, it won’t hold too much detail in the shadows or highlights. This is a contrasty film, so bear that in mind when shooting. The punchiness adds a strong feel to the images. We took light readings for the highlights knowing the shadows would be quite dark.
Future of Film
We were very pleased with the results. Having already been a fan of this film, the bigger format really delivered. Unsurprisingly, the grain wasn’t as prominent in 120, adding an appealing crispness that’s not there in the 35mm version.
Phoenix continues to be a limited edition film. Harman is using all the sales of this film towards developing future colour emulsions. So please continue to support it and pick up a roll or two!
